Breakout Rooms

Breakout Rooms are here for Teams, the functionality of creating sub-meetings under one large meeting. This tool provides users with an opportunity to break large group meetings into smaller groups, and a platform for participants to collaborate and have in-depth discussions.

Start by checking if "New meeting experience" is turned on.

  1. Click on your profile image within Teams
  2. Select ‘Settings
  3. On the ‘General’ tab, check the ‘Turn on new meeting experience’ option under the ‘Application’ section.
  4. Restart Teams

Note prior to using Breakout Rooms

You must be the meeting organizer and use the desktop app to access the breakout rooms option and to manage breakout rooms and participants. Meeting attendees and presenters will not see the breakout rooms option. It is not possible to transfer or share organizer capabilities.

The breakout room icon is located on the meeting menu between the raise hand control and the ellipsis that reveals additional actions.

Noise Cancelling

When your mic is turned on in a Teams meeting or call, background noise around you—shuffling papers, slamming doors, barking dogs, and so on—can distract others. Teams offers three levels of noise suppression to help keep meeting participants focused.

To change the settings start by Select your profile picture at the top right of Teams and then select Settings. Select Devices on the left and then, under Noise suppression, select an option.

By default, Auto is turned on

  • High suppresses background noise that is not speech. This setting takes more system resources, if you experience a drop in your PC's performance, you may need to choose a different option.
  • Low suppresses low levels of persistent background noise, such as a computer fan or air conditioner. An ideal setting for playing music in the background.
